St. John's Scrip Program

Scrip is a term that means "substitute money"
When  St John’s members, families or friends purchase scrip, they're purchasing paper or in most cases, plastic gift certificates that are used just like cash. The scrip is issued by national and local retailers where many of our families already shop. These merchants want to support St. John’s, and in return ask you to support them by shopping with scrip at their stores. St. John’s members can use scrip to purchase everyday expenses like food, gas, clothing, and other essentials, and with every purchase, they earn revenue for our church.

How scrip generates revenue for St. John’s
The Great Lakes Scrip Center acts on behalf of St. John’s, as well as other churches, schools and other non-profit organizations to purchase large amounts of scrip from grocery stores, department stores, and other retailers. Because the scrip is purchased with cash up front, the participating retailers offer a substantial discount. We buy the scrip from Great Lakes Scrip Center at a discount, and re-sell the certificates to St. John’s members for full face value. The discounts that range from two to fifteen percent or more - is retained by St. John’s as revenue. St. John’s church council has designated 50% of the scrip program proceeds go toward mission projects and 50% toward the operating budget.

Scrip is "shopping cart fundraising”
The reason for the effectiveness of scrip is simple: families generate revenue through purchases they would make anyway. Groceries, clothing, toys, gifts, gasoline, or dining out can be purchased with scrip. An organization of 150 families easily spends between one and two million dollars per year on food, clothing and other essentials. If these families use scrip for these purchases, they can raise as much as $40,000 to $80,000 per year for their organization --without spending an additional penny.

Retailers like Scrip, too
Families who purchase scrip certificates actively support the retailers who participate in this program. The reason is simpleā€¦ they know that buying from a scrip participating retailer provides a steady source of revenue for St. John’s.

Placing your Orders
The family order forms (blue) are available in the church library, in the Christian Education hallway display, or in fellowship hall. We place Scrip orders by 9 a.m. on the 2nd & 4th Tuesday of each month throughout the year and special Christmas orders are placed every week in the month of December. A scrip team volunteer is available every Sunday after the 8 and 9 a.m. services to take your order, to hand out orders, and to answer any questions you may have about using scrip. Or you may drop off your orders at the church office during regular office hours.
